When you´re expecting a baby, the list of things you “need” feels endless. Crib, pram, clothes that´ll be outgrown in weeks… and at some point someone mentions the baby monitor. You toss it in the cart almost without thinking but do you really know which one to pick? Not all monitors are equal, and choosing the wrong one could cost you nights of bad sleep. The few you might have had.
Baby monitors basically fall into two major families.
Traditional Monitor
Wi-Fi Camera
It works like a very sophisticated walkie-talkie. One unit stays in the baby’s room, the other travels with you. No apps, no user accounts, no firmware updates. Perfect for privace, because it can be use without any Wi-Fi and data information. Plug it in and it works.
The good: extremely reliable, very low latency, and it doesn’t depend on your Wi-Fi or any third-party servers. If the internet goes down at 3am, your monitor keeps working perfectly.
Best for: smaller flats, people who prefer simplicity, or anyone with an unreliable Wi-Fi connection.
It connects to your home network and lets you see and hear your baby from your phone in the kitchen, the garden, or even the office. Having a Wi-Fi-enabled camera allows us to easily monitor two screens, the monitor and our smartphone, since these types of cameras come with an app that helps us check on our baby in case the monitor is a little far from where we are.
The good: HD video, night vision, two-way audio, motion and sound alerts and unlimited range as long as you have mobile data.
Best for: larger homes, parents working from another room, and anyone who wants smart features like cry detection or activity logging.
Ask yourself these three questions
